Mary Katherine Murphy – Singer/Songwriter
Mary Katherine Murphy is a real, southern, force of nature. She lives, works, and writes in a part of the world that once was known as “The Hit Recording Capitol of the World” – The storied Muscle Shoals Area of North Alabama. Performing since she was only 7 years old, she comes from a long line of people in her family that evidenced unique, musical talent. Her grandfather, Charles Murphy, was a pioneer in writing and recording what was known as Boogie Woogie Music. It was a precursor to what would come to be known later in the 1950’s as Rock and Roll. He was a signed artist with Columbia Records, and at one time, the highest paid musician in the state.
Mary Katherine’s vocal stylings have been likened to those of perennial greats Emmy Lou Harris and Joni Mitchell. She brings a real authenticity and spirituality to her work that is quickly becoming a trademark of both her lyrics and performances. She impressed so many in the industry in the Shoals, that she was able to enlist the help of such greats as David Hood and Spooner Oldham (members of the world famous Swampers, Traffic, etc.) to play on her debut album entitled – Who Are You. She has also performed with legends such as Steve Cropper, Warpaint, David Hood and Billy Block.
On her seven song foray into the music world – Who Are You – she meditates on love and loss, her two amazing children (Jackson and Malachi), and her longing for something more than what exists in the sleepy, beautiful part of America that she calls home.
Alongside writing and performing, Mary Katherine is also an accomplished actress and has appeared in sevearal films (Drowning, Green Corn, and All Hale), PSA’s (Say Something Shoals), and music videos (Grammy nominated Red’s videos for the new album “of Beauty and Rage”).
Like any force of nature, Mary Katherine is one that will continue to gain momentum and ultimately the attention of the entertainment industry as she continues to grow and develop as an artist. Between her God-given talent, drive, and determination, she will most definitely find her way, “To New York City from the banks of the Muscle Shoals”, and beyond.
